Windjammer 2019

Hi All!

Well, it’s that time of year again. The leaves are falling, the wind is biting, and Captain and crew are busily getting Manitou ready for her long winter nap. Thanks to all of you who sailed with us this year, whether on a two hour sail or an adventurous windjammer cruise! We couldn’t do what we do and care for Manitou in the way that she needs if it weren’t for all of you. Because of you we can preserve maritime history and carry on this great tradition.

As always, we particularly enjoyed getting to travel further afield on our multi-day Windjammer cruises! Now that the season is over we’re able to turn our attention to next year’s Windjammer schedule, and we have some exciting offerings that should appeal to both the first time sailor and the long time Windjammer cruiser.

First up is the 3 Day Bay Getaway; September 4-7, 2019. This cruise is the perfect “get acquainted” windjammer, for those who are intrigued by the idea of a sailing trip but leery of a big time or money commitment. We’re confident you’ll be hooked after this! We’ll explore the beauty of well protected Grand Traverse Bay and its variety of anchorages. Price – $635 per person.

After several requests we have added a longer cruise to the schedule, with the 5 Day Explorer; September 10-15, 2019. If you want to truly immerse yourself in the rhythm of a windjammer cruise, this is the trip for you! With a little more time, Manitou can really stretch her legs and experience more of the varied destinations that the northern Lake Michigan region has to offer. On the 5 day sail you are truly able to settle into the windjammer lifestyle and come away with a deep and meaningful experience that you will cherish always. Most of our returning passengers (and there are many!) clamor for this because they appreciate all it has to offer. Price – $899 per person.

Our 4 Day Wine Cruise; September 17-21, continues to be a favorite and is back for another season. Explore the great wine regions of the world with sommelier Nate Redner. Each evening aboard the Manitou we will discuss the wine making histories and taste the varietals of different countries. Dinners will feature paired wines chosen by Nate as a perfect complement to our meals.

Nate was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI, and spent summers on Lake Charlevoix while cooking at Monte Bianco and Bay Harbor Yacht Club, where he discovered his passion for wine. He went to school at Michigan State University and studied Hospitality Business. While in school Nate participated in Les Gourmets, a student run charity dinner and also founded a student group called Spartan Enology Society, which promoted education in the world of wine with the goal of students taking their Sommelier exam through the Court of Master Sommeliers.

After graduating MSU, Nate moved to Chicago to work with Lettuce Entertain You. He started at Shaw’s Crab House in River North then helped open Tokio Pub, Oyster Bah and Booth One, where he now works. His current role is the Beverage Director at Booth One, which is the former Pump Room. He has sat for his Sommelier Exam through the Court of Master Sommeliers. Price – $789 per person.

Side note and kind of a fun fact; Nate holds the Guinness World Record for the “World’s Longest Line of Tacos”.

Of course we couldn’t leave out every year’s most popular cruise! The 4 Day Stories of the Stars; September 24-28, 2019, is back! The beloved Mary Stewart Adams returns to guide us through a journey of the night sky. Mary is a star lore historian, storyteller and author who has been immersed in the history of star knowledge for nearly 30 years. She led the initiative that resulted in International Dark Sky Park designation for the Headlands property in Emmet County, MI, which later resulted in the State of Michigan passing legislation to protect the night sky over an additional 23,000 acres of state park and forest land. Mary writes and speaks extensively to local, national and international audiences on our relationship to the night sky and its cultural consequences, and has received numerous honors for her work. In addition, she is a member of the International Dark Sky Places Committee of the International Dark Sky Association, protecting and designating dark sky sites around the world. Mary’s weekly radio program “The Storyteller’s Guide to the Night Sky” airs during Morning Edition on Interlochen Public Radio every Monday. Mary makes her home under the starry skies of Harbor Springs, MI. Price $789 per person.

Last, but certainly not least, is our 3 Day Fall Color Seeker; October 2-5, 2019! Join us as we wrap up the season with the emerging colors of fall starting to spring up along the shores of Grand Traverse Bay! Price – $585 per person.

No matter which trip you choose your cruise will be highlighted by new friends, casual fun, and phenomenal home cooked meals prepared on a wood burning stove.
